High Efficiency Solid State Lighting Enabled by New Technologies

Solid state lighting based on wide bandgap semiconductor LEDs is expected to provide high efficiency (up to 70-80 %) lighting solutions and large savings in global electricity consumption in the next 5-10 years. The research program aims at developing inorganic LED prototypes based on

  1. new device geometries and materials, utilizing metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) and atomic layer deposition (ALD) techniques in the chip fabrication,
  2. optimization of the thermodynamics of LEDs and reducing heating and increasing internal quantum efficiency by studying the defect physics,
  3. improved light extraction from LEDs by plasmonic nanostructures and multilayer coatings grown by ALD techniques and
  4. developing fixture and optics for testing the new luminaires in full scale lighting applications.

The expected outcome includes new LED structures and geometries, improved growth technologies and packaging solutions and luminaire, fixture and optics optimized for the new LED devices.
