Innovative biofuel cell system for portable electronics applications


The main goal of the research project is to create scientific basis and innovative technology for a micro fuel cell system intended for portable electronics appliances of power range 0.5 – 20 W. The technology under development is based on in-situ on-demand production of hydrogen and a new PEM fuel cell construction maximizing volumetric power density of the cells.


The project intends to provide a solution to the fundamental problem emerging because today’s battery technology cannot any more response properly to the growing demand of energy in portable electronic appliances, like cell phones or laptops, due to their strongly expanding functionalities. Fuel cell technology enables storing the portable energy in chemical form feasible for consumer logistics. The project exploits widely the expertise and know-how existing in different departments at Aalto University.
